Food & Nutrition
Eating a healthy, balanced diet is an important part of maintaining children’s good health so here at nursery we provide a variety of meals that are prepared and cooked fresh on the premises daily by our Nursery Cook. We follow a three weekly menu that is changed every term to include fresh, seasonal food, children’s favourites and flavours from around the world so children get to experience a variety of textures and flavours.
Menus are displayed in the foyer and shared with parents via e-mail. Please ask if you would like a copy for your own use.
Breakfast
Is served between 8.00 and 9.00 and includes a wide variety of options, such as, cereal, toast, Scotch pancakes, croissants and yoghurt. Fresh fruit is always served too.
Lunch
Is a cooked meal served at 11.30am with a healthy dessert to follow.
Tea
A light tea is served at 3.15pm.
All children within the nursery eat their meals in their own room fully supervised by staff who provide a good role model for them as they encourage social skills and good manners as they eat together. We also share knowledge and understanding of where the food comes from through discussion, cookery sessions and by growing fruit and vegetables.
Staff work with parents to gather information about children’s allergies/intolerances/preferences so we can ensure that they are not given food or drink that may harm them. The baby room staff liaise closely with parents to gather information to support a child’s weaning journey. We are happy to make up formula feeds provided by parents and have facilities to store breast milk that is clearly labelled and dated.
All staff handling food have undertaken basic food hygiene training with those preparing food holding level 3 Food Safety certificates.
Meal Times
At Lord Williams’s School Day Nursery (LWSDN), we have regard to the statutory EYFS nutrition guidance effective from September 2025.
Here at LWSDN we regard meal times as an important part of our day. Eating represents a social time for children and adults and helps children to learn about healthy eating. Eating a healthy, balanced diet is also an important part of maintaining children’s good health so we provide a variety of meals that are prepared and cooked fresh on the premises daily by our Nursery Cook. We follow a three weekly menu that is changed every term to include fresh, seasonal food, children’s favourites and flavours from around the world so children get to experience a variety of textures and flavours.
Babies and weaning
Here at Lord Williams’s School Day Nursery we work alongside parents to support the introduction of a varied diet alongside children’s usual breast milk or infant formula. We will never knowingly introduce new foods unless they have been tried at home first so we ask parents to complete a weaning chart to show when they have tried something new and update this as/when necessary. We may also ask parents to try certain foods at home and let us know if children react in any way or are able to tolerate them.
Catering for children's dietary needs
The Nursery aims to create a “nut free” environment by:
Implementing a “nut-free policy” that prohibits bringing specific nut products, such as loose nuts, peanut butter, and items with “may contain nuts” warnings, into the environment.
Educate everyone about the importance of the policy and the severity of nut allergies.
offers a nut free environment as far as we can possibly and we can cater for dietary preferences and for children with food allergies and intolerances. Please ensure you make us aware of any requirements as you become aware. The staff are fully briefed on all children that have dietary requirements.
The Manager and Nursery Cook conduct regular reviews and checks of the food safety standards in the kitchen. We are also inspected by Environmental Health Officers from Oxfordshire Environmental Health Department and consistently maintain a 5 rating meaning “very good”.
